It has been confirmed that infrastructure support service company Amey plc were recently struck by a Mount Locker ransomware cyberattack.
It has been reported by numerous sources that Amey – who work within industries such as transportation and civil engineering – had there computer systems breached and had confidential data leaked to a separate site. The stolen data included employee documents, meeting information, bank statements and financial reports.
The Mount Locker ransomware group – who were at the centre of multiple cyberattacks throughout 2020 – supposedly stole just under 150 GB worth of Amey’s data, with half of this being posted to the separate leak site.
Amey have been in contact with UK authorities – such as the National Centre for Cyber Security and the National Crime Agency – to try and investigate the incident further; the company are hopeful that early efforts to investigate the attack will allow them to keep disruption to a minimum.
It is currently unclear what negotiations and discussions remain ongoing between Amey and Mount Locker, however the leaks could indicate that the threat actors are demanding a significant fee.
