New automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras are to be installed on roads in Rutland, the East Midlands county.
The cameras – which allow police to rapidly track specific vehicles as registration numbers are read and instantly checked against database records – are being put in place to help target cross-border crime.
Currently, there are over 10,000 ANPR cameras in the UK,.
Sgt Paul Kear was pleased to welcome the new cameras to the area: “They help us deal with criminals who are ‘visiting’ this area to commit crimes.
“The cameras are very helpful in being able to trace a vehicle when it leaves the area, and means we can work more easily with other police forces across the country to trace criminals.”
