BA facing major group data breach claim

January 13, 2021

Over 16,000 British Airways (BA) customers have joined a group claim against the company following a mass data-breach incident which occurred in 2018, reports the Financial Times.

The case is set to become the largest data-breach group-claim in UK legal history and has been formed against BA after the company exposed the personal information of 400,000 customers – this is thought to include customer names, addresses and various bank details.

Having already been handed a £20m fine from the UK’s data protection regulator, it is reported that – based on previous court rulings – each victim of the breach could be compensated up to £2,000.

BA commented: “We continue to vigorously defend the litigation in respect of the claims brought arising out of the 2018 cyber attack.

“We do not recognise the damages figures put forward, and they have not appeared in the claims.”

Tom Goodhead, a Partner at PGMBM (the lead solicitors in the case against BA), remarked: “We trust companies like British Airways with our personal information and they have a duty to all of their customers and the public at large to take every possible step to keep it safe.”

Goodhead claimed that the company had presided over a “monumental failure”.
