Children’s passport scanners on trial at airport

February 28, 2023

Use of electronic passport scanners for children under 18 have been under trial on under 18s at Heathrow Airport.

Children aged 10 and 11 used the technology at Terminal 5 during the recent half-term week to test their efficiency.

Children over the age of 12 can use the scanners.

It came at a time when Heathrow reported pre-pandemic numbers using the airport once more.

It reported 5.4m customers travelled through it in January, making it the busiest start to a year since 2020.

Most travellers – 1.6m – were from the EU, followed by people from North America at 1.2m.

Meanwhile, the airport will face a challenge when Border Force strike action was announced by the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS).

The one day stoppage takes place on 15 March.
