Creating opportunities for women in the security industry

Amelia Fish, Graduate Security Consultant at Buro Happold reflects on her journey into the security industry and the challenges women face in male-dominated spaces.

Addressing the lack of women in security

My journey into the industry began at University College London, where I completed a BSc in Security and Crime Science.

When I started my degree, I had no idea that security consulting even existed.

I was first introduced to the field during my internship with the Design Out Crime Officer (DOCO) at City of London Police in my second year, which ultimately led me to apply for the graduate role at Buro Happold.

When I entered the industry, I was genuinely surprised by how few women I encountered across the wider security sector.

Although my own company is more balanced, the lack of gender diversity at major industry events was striking.

Additional challenges in the workforce

Through my experiences and conversations it became clear that young women often feel intimidated and face additional challenges navigating these male‑dominated spaces.

To help address this, I recently began chairing bi‑monthly ‘Women in Security’ meetings within my team.

These sessions create a space to discuss current barriers and provide an open forum where colleagues at all levels can share experiences, offer advice and support one another.

I feel fortunate to be surrounded by such talented and intelligent women and I learn a great deal from these conversations.

Creating opportunities for dialogue and mutual support is essential for improving inclusion and building confidence in a male-dominated industry.

Looking ahead, I’m optimistic. It’s encouraging to see more women entering the field and to witness how the security industry has come together to uplift and support one another.
