Facebook to enhance security features in 2021

January 1, 2021

It has recently been announced by Facebook that users will be able to set up physical security keys to log into the app in 2021, reports Reuters.

If this is the case, users will purchase physical keys from retailers – whether this be in-person or through trusted online vendors – and register them with Facebook before verifying their identity and logging in.

Although the security initiative is being put in place for high profile accounts more specifically, the physical keys are expected to be available to every user in 2021.

Paired with this announcement, the California-based company have also claimed that different types of accounts will be joining their Facebook Protect programme in the new year; the programme is currently used by government officials and politicians because it offers added security factors such as threat-monitoring and two-factor authentication.

According to further details published by Axios, with human rights activists and journalists set to be added to Facebook Protect, the programme – which is only currently available in the US – could also be expanded to countries who are preparing for elections.

More information about these physical keys – as well any expansion plans for the Facebook Protect programme – are likely to be announced by the company in 2021.
