Rositta Simon, Embedded Risk Consultant, reflects on the impact of the Women in Security mentorship initiative.
Growth rarely happens in isolation; it is shaped by the guidance, perspective and lived experience of those who choose to share what they have learned.
This motivation for growth was at the heart of my decision to sign up for the Women in Security mentorship initiative last year, during which I got the opportunity to be mentored by Diane Marchena – a senior security leader with extensive experience in the financial services sector.
Her career exemplifies both professional excellence and quiet resolve in a traditionally male-dominated field.
Over seven months, Diane offered me a window into her world, sharing insights on her professional journey, motivations and approach to leadership, as well as how she built credibility in the field.
Towards the end of our virtual sessions in November, we had the opportunity to meet in person during Diane’s work visit to India.
Observing her professional presence gave me a new perspective on what senior female leadership in security looks like in practice.
What stayed with me most was the candour in our conversations and willingness to speak honestly about the more challenging aspects of the profession.
I believe such openness is essential to understanding the nuances of working as a woman in security.
These discussions provided me with clarity, perspective and reassurance, along with learnings suited to my own professional context.
This mentorship has shaped my aspirations for the future and I look to pay it forward by supporting other women finding their footing in this field.
I hope, in time, more women will enter this industry and share in the good fortune I have experienced – working within an organisation and community that genuinely fosters and enables women to thrive.
