Security Journal UK catches up with Iain McCallister, CEO, MAN Commercial Protection Ltd after the company was named ‘Business of the Year’ at the British Security Awards 2021.

Could you tell us about the services MAN Commercial Protection provides?

MAN Commercial Protection specialises in all areas of manned guarding security. We provide security solutions across a wide range of sectors, such as logistics and distribution, entertainment, retail, manufacturing, large-scale public events, engineering and transport. Our services include static guarding, event security, keyholding and alarm response, reception/concierge and CCTV monitoring.

Our client base is varied and exciting, ranging from blue chip companies to distribution industry giants and local authorities, with many of our customers having used us for over a decade.

What is it that makes MAN Commercial Protection stand out from the competition?

MAN Commercial Protection has been trading now for 28 years and remains a privately-owned family business. We are a corporate company with a family feel, with our management team ensuring that our values are represented by our teams of officers across the UK.

While continuing to grow significantly, we take pride in delivering continuous great service to our existing clients and, as a result, enjoy an extremely high retention rate of both employees and clients.

We have an excellent reputation within our industry but we are always pushing to grow bigger and become better. We are fully ACS accredited with our most recent ACS score putting us in the top 2% of security companies in the UK. Further to this, our Compliance Team are always working to ensure we achieve accredited status in all relevant standards; we have recently been awarded EcoVadis gold sustainability rating and have become members of Sedex. Obtaining these accreditations benefits both MAN Commercial and our clients and demonstrates our corporate social responsibility.

Our business has grown significantly over the past three years – with 47% growth last year alone – and we have no plans to stand still. We are continually pushing forward and believe in investing in our people and our structure to keep achieving. Such investments include the growth of our recruitment, HR and control room teams, purchasing a second Head Office space, offering training support to our officers and focusing on employee engagement.

How does it feel to be named ‘Business of the Year’ at the British Security Awards 2021?

To be recognised for our success and as an industry leader by our peers at the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) is a fantastic achievement.

I am absolutely delighted that we have received an award which recognises the part played by everyone in the Company, especially after the last 12 months which have been so challenging for businesses and individuals across the UK.

If there was one thing you could change in the industry, what would it be?

A stricter regulation of all services supplied within the security industry to ensure all customers receive the highest standard of customer service and professionalism that we pride ourselves on here at MAN Commercial Protection.

How has the business adapted to the challenges posed by COVID-19?

We have been lucky that our business has grown during the pandemic; in addition to working with new customers, many of our existing clients requested increased hours. We have been involved in the NHS supply chain for both the COVID-19 testing centres and vaccine storage and transportation.

As key-workers, our teams have worked tirelessly throughout an unprecedented situation to continue delivering outstanding and uninterrupted service for our clients.

Are you looking to target any new industry verticals in the next 12 months?

We are always keen to expand into new industries. When our Commercial Team identifies a potential new sector, our approach is to ensure that we become fully accredited to supply security services in this area. We are currently working with a client in the aviation sector, and have also recently started our first COMAH security assignment. After a successful roll out of these services we are looking to increase our footprint in both sectors over the next 12 months.

We have also been recognised by the British Transport Police as part of the Railway Safety Accreditation Scheme which will be developing in the coming months.

We are keen to expand further into the manufacturing industry and are also currently targeting port security and further opportunities with the NHS.
