Pre-Intersec Q&A interview with Jason Wakefield, Sales Director at Todd Research

January 12, 2022

How has the demand for Todd Research’s solutions changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Todd Research has successfully managed to increase its sales compared to previous years. Even though the pandemic has changed the way we work, the demand is still the same and we have not seen any indication of industry slowdown. The Todd Research factory has been manufacturing at full capacity throughout the pandemic and because of this we have recently increased our staffing levels to take care of the demand.

Since the first lockdown in March 2020, we have adapted our workplace and our processes and have invested in technology to ensure that our business can operate efficiently in a pandemic situation. We are 100% confident that due to our excellent reputation and service delivery we will continue to grow, with or without COVID-19.

What are the biggest challenges facing the aviation industry currently?

Throughout the pandemic, the aviation industry has probably been one of the hardest hit, with all flights being grounded and a lot of staff migrating into other industries; this problem has been enhanced by Brexit hitting around the same time as the pandemic. Since the aviation industry has started back up, Todd Research has had conversations with key members of the aviation industry and one of the biggest challenges they are facing is the recruitment of suitable staff. With this in mind, we expanded our portfolio further and introduced the TR-STS trolley scanner for evaluation of inflight supplies. This was taken into Heathrow airport to help alleviate the current staffing levels.

What industry verticals is Todd Research targeting in 2022?

Todd Research has built its reputation since 1950 in manufacturing and installing postal X-ray scanning equipment. Since then, we have evolved into other areas of interest within the security industry. Part of this growth is looking at vertical markets where we can make a major contribution towards the security in these sectors.

The latest verticals that are showing great interest in products that we supply are both existing and new government agencies as well as aviation and the banking sector. The reason behind this is the detection power and the connectivity features that are built into our X-ray machines. Increasing our portfolio of products has been invaluable in opening up new vertical markets and we will continue to do this with new developments in the pipeline throughout 2022/23.

What are you most looking forward to at Intersec 2022?

It has been two years since we have exhibited at Intersec in Dubai and we are looking forward to talking face-to-face again with our distributors within the Middle East. In previous years at this exhibition we have also had great success in meeting with new potential clients and distributors and have gone on to form excellent business relationships.

One of the many benefits about exhibiting at Intersec is the location. Dubai is a central hub which makes it easy for our other distributors across the globe to attend. Todd Research is always looking for complimentary products that we can add to our current portfolio; we find that exhibitions like Intersec are invaluable in building key relationships with existing and new suppliers.

What can visitors expect to see from Todd Research at the event?

Todd Research has been planning this event for a long time now and it is had equipment being delivered into Dubai by sea that left back in October 2021. The equipment that we are taking with us is our world class TR15 Cabinet x-ray scanner and the very latest TR360PRO+ metal detection unit. Exhibiting in hall S3 stand A43, we will be demonstrating the very latest functionality that we have built into these units.

We will also have our recently launched e-learning modules for operators of both conveyor and cabinet x-ray scanners, that we can demonstrate for live one to one sessions.

Myself and Business Development Executive, Martyn Stanley, will be on the stand to answer questions and advise on our whole product portfolio including cabinet x-ray scanners, trace detection and vehicle scanners.
