Georgie Powell, Senior Operations Manager at TMS Protection, reflects on her journey through the security industry and how confidence has shaped her approach to leadership.
I have worked at TMS Protection for the past nine years, starting my career as a Door Supervisor I have progressed into my current role as Senior Operations Manager.
Being a female in a male-dominated industry has shaped my approach to leadership.
Early on, I learnt to be clear about my strengths and the value I bring.
Having confidence and professionalism mattered just as much as physical presence and staying calm under pressure often speaks louder than trying to match stereotypes.
As a woman, there were times when I had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously.
However, by persevering, I have proved to my peers that women are not only an integral part of security teams, but we can lead, inspire and perform at the highest level just as well as men.
Having a good support network at TMS Protection has enabled me to be in the position I am today.
I have been fortunate to work with colleagues and leaders who recognised my potential, challenged me to grow and backed me when it mattered.
Their guidance helped me develop the skills and confidence needed to step into senior leadership.
The most pinnacle thing I have learnt is that effective security work depends on communication, trust and mutual respect.
Respect is not something you can demand. It must be earned through your actions and how you perform when it counts, regardless of your gender and that has stayed with me throughout my career.
