Report reveals the impressive growth of Scotland’s cybersecurity sector

February 4, 2021

The ‘Scottish Cyber Cluster Analysis Report’ from ScotlandIS has recently revelaed that the country’s cybersecurity industry is thriving, reports Holyrood.

Scotland is currently home to over 200 cyber companies and continues to invest in its cyber-skills.

The report found that each year for the past five years, 10 new Scottish cyber businesses have been established and that in the same period of time, 56% of non-Scottish companies have set up in the country. Although the sector is predominantly made up of smaller companies, 20% are large corporations.

It was also found that 70% of Scotland’s universities now offer cyber security courses and that their undergraduate intake doubled from 200 to 400 between 2014 and 2019; this educational investment has not gone unnoticed, with Edinburgh Napier University recently being recognised by GCHQ for its commitment to cyber security education.

Ciara Mitchell, Head of Cyber at ScotlandIS, remarked: “Scotland’s cyber sector continues to go from strength to strength. This report demonstrates that Scotland has real strength in depth, with companies ranging from small start-ups to large corporates.

“As well as attracting inward investment from the likes of Cisco and Corero, there’s a wide range of high-growth home-made businesses that are starting to attract a lot of attention.

“University start-ups are a great source of new business growth and it’s important that these companies are supported. The sector is delivering well-paid jobs and providing much-needed employment.

“However, with Scotland lagging a little behind other parts of the UK in attracting investment in our cyber sector, there’s still work to be done.”
