New report reveals the vitality in physical access control

Mercury Security has published its Trends in Access Controllers Report, based on a survey of over 450 security professionals across North America and Europe.

The findings reportedly highlight the controller’s vital role in a physical access control system (PACS), where the device not only enforces access policies but also connects with readers to verify user credentials—ranging from ID badges to biometrics and mobile identities.

Physical access control proves critical in PACS design

With 72% of respondents identifying the controller as a critical or important factor in PACS design, the report is said to underscore how the choice of controller platform has become a strategic decision for today’s security leaders.

The key trends reshaping physical access controller design and selection include:

  • Security-first thinking
  • Mobile and cloud Integration
  • Reliability is non-negotiable
  • Backward and forward compatibility
  • Interoperability and open architecture

The report also explored the emerging role of AI and edge computing in controller performance, as well as the growing integration of access data with building operations. Read the full report here.
