Ahead of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, which is to take place on 17 April, Thames Valley Police has been carrying out specialist searches around Windsor and the surrounding areas.

The heightened security measures are being put in place to ensure that the public is kept safe throughout this period of national mourning for Prince Philip, who passed away peacefully on 9 April.

With officers and dogs searching street furniture, phone boxes, drains, bins and more, the Police have also been carrying out patrols in the town centre, the Long Walk and Home Park. Not only has the physical police presence increased in Windsor, but Thames Valley Police confirmed that there are other ‘not so visible security measures’ being implemented ahead of the funeral.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson told BBC: “We would ask that the public respect the royal household’s wishes and the government advice by not visiting royal residences or gathering in public, in order to protect each other and reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission.

“Additional officers will be patrolling Windsor town centre along with the surrounding area to help provide reassurance and keep local residents, businesses and people safe.”
