The Security Institute announces new Chair Elect

As the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 25 June 2026 approaches, The Security Institute has announced that the current Chair of the Board of Directors, Ms Julie Nel, will be standing down at the conclusion of her three-year term of office.

The Board reportedly extends its sincere thanks to Nel for her leadership, dedication and significant contribution to the Institute during her tenure as Chair.

The Institute has articulated that in line with the organisations continuing commitment to professionalism, strong governance and best practice, Christopher (Chris) Stevens, currently Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors, has been appointed Chair Elect.

Delivering strategic objectives

Nel is set to remain in post with Stevens working alongside her to ensure a structured and effective transition.

This planned approach, according to the organisation, will support continuity in leadership, stability in governance and a clear focus on delivering the Institute’s strategic objectives.

Following the AGM, Stevens will reportedly assume the role.

Supporting growth and influence

According to The Security Institute, Stevens brings extensive experience across policing, transport security and major infrastructure projects, alongside a strong commitment to advancing the security profession.

In his current role, he has reportedly been an active contributor to the Board’s work, supporting strategic direction and governance.

As Chair, he is set to continue to work closely with the Board and Head Office to maintain momentum and support the Institute’s continued growth and influence.

Ensuring continuity in leadership

Speaking on the appointment, Sarah Austerberry, CEO, The Security Institute said: “Chris’s appointment as Chair Elect reflects our commitment to strong governance and effective succession planning.

“His experience as Vice-Chair, combined with his wider professional background, ensures continuity in leadership and positions the Institute well to continue delivering on its strategic priorities.”
