Oversight of UK Facebook data will be transferred to the company’s California headquarters post-Brexit, reports Reuters.
The decision has been made by the social media giant as Brexit discussions continue between London and Brussels.
In an official statement from Facebook’s UK headquarters, the firm said: “Like other companies, Facebook has had to make changes to respond to Brexit and will be transferring legal responsibilities and obligations for UK users from Facebook Ireland to Facebook Inc.
“There will be no change to the privacy controls or the services Facebook offers to people in the UK.”
The announcement has sparked significant attention, especially when paired with the pressure the UK is putting on Facebook’s current policies regarding terrorism and hate speech, as well as the company’s efforts to implement strong encryption – something the UK is attempting to ban.
It has been reported that users will be directly informed of the changes midway through 2021.
