New research by WithSecure suggests the number of ransomware products has fallen in the past year.
In its latest update on the threat posed, WithSecure claims the number of new families and unique variants actually peaked five years ago and continued to plateau until 2020.
But 2021 saw the number fall sharply, according to researchers.
This may be because cybercriminals are using Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) products.
More recently, there are claims economic sanctions imposed on Russia as a result of the Ukraine war cybercriminals are unable to cash in so easily.
Others argue offenders in the region to simply operate from elsewhere.
